Another sad passing.  This time it is Keith Emerson.  A maestro and master of the keyboard instrument if ever one existed.  His bands included The Nice, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, 3, and The Keith Emerson Band.  Emerson fully integrated the newly emerging performance synthesizer into his already stellar piano and Hammond organ on stage arsenal.  A true virtuoso and legendary performer, Emerson’s style and compositions will continue to influence far into the future.  Seek out other clips on you tube and marvel.
Found another lovely article.  This one is about blood sucking nasties lurking in our lakes, seas and oceans.  The victim of this attack was able to secure samples of these parasites.  Our authorities haven’t figured out what the things are yet but I’m sure their findings will be most interesting. See the article below: http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/australian-teens-feet-bloodied-by-mystery-sea-creatures/ar-AApASFb?li=BBmkt5R&ocid=spartanntp To further get into the skin crawling mode, check out this glorious trailer for the whacked out science fiction/horror hybrid, “The Flesh Eaters” from 1964.  You will notice certain similarities….
Multi-instrumentalist and revolving UFO member MVP, Paul Raymond, passed away recently.  Raymond played keyboards and guitar in many different iterations of UFO and had a memorable participation in The Michael Schenker Band.  A very reliable addition to any band, his energy and enthusiasm will be missed in the music world.
Dependable British leading lady, Diana Rigg, is dead at 82. Rigg made a splash in the ’60’s as heroine Emma Peel in the iconic TV series, The Avengers. I have a fondness for her performance in “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” (1969) where she temporarily became Mrs. Bond to George Lazenby’s James Bond. Also did good work as crazed thespian Vincent Price’s daughter in “Theatre of Blood” (1973). She will be missed.
Wes Craven, creator of Nightmare on Elm Street, and Scream directed this ’80’s science fiction horror film for television. The money must have been right. The movie is a clear cut example of good folk versus evil folk and it has a somewhat annoying 1980’s sheen to it. Robert Urich relocates his family to his new work site and residence. It turns out that the influencers in the community all belong to a fashionable country club. Low and behold, the country club harbors a malignant force that guarantees success or failure in the suburban, gated community that the family moves [More]
We mention the sad departing of the guy who wore “The Creature From The Black Lagoon” costume UNDERWATER for that great Universal monster series. The underwater sequence where the Creature mirrors the movie heroine’s movements is basically a well-choreographed ballet. Pretty amazing. We thank you, Ricou, for your great contributions to the moving image!
Tony Todd was recognized for his roles in the horror franchises “Candyman” and “Final Destination” and my personal favorite “Night of the Living Dead” (1990). Tony has recently passed away. Tood gave a strong performance as Ben in the 1990 “Dead” remake. Thrust into a nightmare scenario, Ben attempts to figure out how the dead have suddenly reanimated and why they are trying to eat the living. Pretty grim stuff. Ben and Barbara occupy a remote farmhouse and attempt to zombie proof the place and ensure their survival. Todd is very good in the part. R.I.P., Mr. Todd.
Crazy wrestlers missing moves or getting over exhuberent in their matches.  The result?  A messed up body part (s).  Looks painful.  What a way to make a living!
“A Tab In The Ocean”: a 16 minute opus from the band Nektar.  This is in many ways as much a rock opera as The Who’s “Tommy”.   Riffs and phrases repeat throughout the extended length song.  Monster riffs, guitars, a majestic organ line, and impassioned singing make this a truly memorable track.  Did Rush get inspiration from this number and apply it toward their own epic composition, “2112”?  You betcha.
A harrowing account of a collection of dubious characters  involved in a drug deal that goes bad.  A counsellor, in need of some heavy cash, agrees to go in on a deal with some of his drug connected buddies.  Little do they know that they are being set up by a member of their inner circle.  Visually stunning work with an equally stunning cast.  Ridley Scott directs a cast that includes Michael Fassbender ( who took a turn as a sadistic artificial person in Scott’s “Alien” prequel “Prometheus”), Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz, and Javier Bardem.  Incidentally, the screenplay [More]
This movie has been playing a lot on cable TV.  It is, in fact, a very fine film.  Paul Newman is a man who was brought up among Native Americans in the Old West.  His attempt to enter into “civilized society” meets with many harrowing encounters with man’s inhumanity to man.  There are quite a few characters appearing in this film for whom enough just isn’t good enough.  They want more than the what they’ve already got, no matter how sizable, and do not care who or what is forced out of the way on their quest to get the [More]
Watching “The Mist” again recently got me to thinking about the original source material, Stephen King’s novella, and the faint memories I had of reading it.  I watched the movie and then reread the story.  The movie is very faithful to the story.  But then there is that ending of the movie…. Once of the single most downer conclusions in popular culture storytelling, I would have to say.  Granted, the scenario is imagined in the story but not actually executed.  That grim prospect is dutifully carried out in the movie.  Oh, it is an awful choice to go down that [More]
This time of year with the holiday season upon us can be a stressful time. We are getting all our last minute shopping done, we are battling traffic, going to work, and juggling a lot of other life necessities and the damned weather is completely sticking its foot out and tripping up our good outlooks on life. The video clip linked here shows the people who have to deal with the elements on a daily basis: the TV weather people. Sometimes, the wind, rain, blizzards get them down too. Watch some hilarious meltdowns! Merry Christmas!
Science Fiction mind fuckage in the high mode. AI experiments run rampant in a secluded state of the art home/fortress/laboratory surrounded by some of the most grandeur examples of nature imaginable. In this fabulous environment, human and artificial intelligence interact and collide, deceiving each other along the way and providing a battleground for a survival of the fittest both mentally and physically. Not hard to imagine who comes out on top. Beautifully shot with some creepy footage of the initial AI experiments of brilliant programmer Nathan. It is his last creation, Ava, who takes on a very vibrant life of [More]
