I stumbled upon this movie late at night and was instantly appalled! What a horrific, nightmarish spectacle it all is. A unit of Russian soldiers during World War II are unfortunate enough to wander into the Hell of a den of nearly unstoppable human/robot hybrids. The soldiers’ mission is to apprehend a latter day descendant of the evil Dr. Frankenstein himself and put a stop to his hideous killer creations. They should have gone AWOL and fled the mission. Bob Clark’s “Black Christmas” appeared many years before the onslaught of slasher films featuring idiosyncratic, stalking killers. This killer likes to freak out future victims by calling them on the phone and issuing gibberish about his foul intentions. There are many POV impressions from the killer’s vantage point. Victims are dispatched gruesomely and left in their lifeless, idle suspension to hang or sit undiscovered in the sorority house attic where some of the killer’s work unfolds. This clip is a masterfully staged study of the shark hunter Quint from Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws”. Quint, played by Robert Shaw, recounts his earlier in life run in with man eating sharks. The profound horror of this life threatening event probably played no small part in his decision to hunt sharks for a living. “Jaws” is still an amazing thrill ride of a movie after all these years. I think it may be Spielburg’s best picture. This scene is eminently creepy and evocative.
A 1960’s attempt to bring Wonder Woman to the small screen. After the huge success of the campy Batman series starring Adam West, a small effort was made to test out if the same serio-comic approach could be applied to the comic book character Wonder Woman. Here is the result of that effort. Best that it was passed over. Maybe more promising would be to screen the Batgirl pilot which never made it to network TV created during the TV Batman series’ period of popularity and bedlam.
What a cool concept! A haunted house walk through at Universal Studios in Hollywood of psycho Michael Myers’ various killing grounds. In this scenario, you go toward the hulking Shape and he and other scary figures jump out at you. No nasty slashing or blood spilling is involved. You may soil your shorts but at least you’re doing this in the dark. You may get away with no one seeing it.
If money is no object with regards to gasoline prices and you need to satisfy your wanderlust, then consider taking a road trip across Highway 50 in Nevada AKA “The Loneliest road in America”. I have been on this highway a couple of times and I must say that there are some cool small towns and many historical sites along the way but there are also miles and miles of twisting, winding roads travelling through a barren desert locale. Very enjoyable, further adventure of hockey mask wearing, unstoppable serial butcher, Jason Vorhees. Jason is being studied at a government facility in the 21st century. After some murderous mayhem, he is cryogenically frozen along with one of the doctors studying him. Flash forward to the 25th century where another research team find the two iced over specimens and take them aboard their vehicle and rocket off back to their space habitat. I love this flick. Atmospheric, indeed! An otherworldly craft touches down in the British countryside. Three aliens are variously seen in the shadows. A military unit picks up the craft on radar and begins to search for whatever appeared on the scope. One of the aliens is struck by a car when the fellow tries to dash across a fog enshrouded road at night. He is taken to a hospital where he is looked after. This picture was made on a small budget and sports some Ray Harryhausen style stop motion animation effects. Pretty good effects at that. Sometimes the figures and models look out of scale with their background but the motion achieved is more than adequate. This is a good flick for a lazy Saturday afternoon: enough thrills to keep you occupied but nothing spectacular either. Kid finds blaster in the desert which allows him to blow things to smithereens. Another blast from the past. The amazing, original line up of The Stranglers in their music video for “Duchess”. Ah, they just don’t make them like this anymore and you may say that’s a good thing. But it does have a nice and gritty cinematic quality using those old ’70’s film stocks. Directed by old school music video maestro, Russell Mulcahy. Whatever happened to him? Time relentlessly passes.
